Helen Murdoch Receives Prestigious Laurel Award

LONGSTANDING VOLUNTEER HELEN MURDOCH SURPRISED WITH GIRLGUIDING’S PRESIGIOUS LAUREL AWARD

Helen has been awarded the Laurel Award for her sparkling Guiding enthusiasm, making everyone she meets feel special and for her boundless energy and support travelling far and wide. She is a true asset to her community!

Due to the current government restrictions, we have had to cancel our annual awards day so had to come up with an alternative plan! Helen believed she was attending a ZOOM meeting but whilst on the call she was told there was a knock on the door. It was then fellow volunteer Sarah-Jane, practising social distancing, presented her with the exciting news and flowers.

On receiving the award Helen said: “I was astonished to receive the Laurel Award – and absolutely thrilled, it is such an honour! I have been involved in Girlguiding most of my life and have gained so much – as well as the adventures, opportunities and challenges, I have met so many wonderful people. And I love sharing this adventure with others, both girls and adults, so that they can experience the Guiding buzz too.”

Helen & Sarah- Jane

“We did not want Helen to miss out on receiving this award, she is an exceptional volunteer that always works hard to ensure girls get the best opportunities.” Lesley Mathews, Chief Commissioner.

Helen has held many roles within Girlguiding Cymru including President, PR & Communications Lead Volunteer and a member of the Trustee Board.

Sarah-Jane surprised Helen by leaving flowers & gifts at her front door.

Helen has worked hard to network across Wales including at the Royal Welsh Show, visiting the Welsh Government events at the Senedd encouraging girls to participate and speak and working with our partners.

Helen was also President of the  Soroptimist International in South Wales and during her time arranged speaking competitions for young members including Guides and Senior Section members.

Felicity Ladbrooke said: “She is a fantastic unit leader with 3rd Newton Brownies in Porthcawl, doing many exciting and adventurous activities with the girls including travelling up the River Taff on a steamer to get to the biggest ever sleepover at the Millennium Stadium to celebrate the Big Brownie Birthday.  She also helped create  ‘Brownies got Talent’ a biannual event within her county giving girls a chance to use their skills and reach their potential.”
