Electromagnetics Challenge Badge

Our new Electromagnetics Challenge Badge is aimed at all guiding sections. It includes a selection of activities to choose from with hands-on activities, crafts, and games.

Please read the safety requirements within the challenge pack before handling the magnets and carrying out the activities.

About Magnetism:

We need magnetic materials to help us make a greener, cleaner planet. More than 99% of all electrical energy is made using machines constructed from magnetic materials. They are the active material in electric motors, transformers, generators, sensors, data storage and many other electronic components.

Why complete this challenge?

If we can improve our understanding of magnetic materials, we can save electricity, reduce pollution and find new ways to recycle our waste.

What if all the magnet packs are sold out?

You can complete many of the activities using a household magnet i.e. fridge magnet. There is also a list of materials and links to where to buy them within the challenge pack.

The badge is FREE to all Girlguiding Cymru members (P&P apply).
For all other regions, will be at a cost of £1.

This challenge was put together by Cardiff University’s School of Engineering and their world-class Magnetic Materials and Applications research group (MAGMA). They wanted to share their enthusiasm for electromagnetism with Girlguiding Cymru’s 20,000 young members.

The badge was developed as part of a Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Award and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund via Welsh Government.
