Girlguiding Cymru Cricket Event @Sophia Gardens
Report by Deputy Chief Commissioner Sarah-Jane Burns

Thursday 30th June saw nearly 50 Brownies, Guides and Rangers come together at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff for a “Give It A Go” cricket session. The event, in partnership with Cricket Wales, gave the girls the opportunity to try out the game and learn more about bowling, batting and fielding.

With expert coaching provided by David Payne, ably supported by our team of Sports Educators, the girls were soon getting to grips with the game under the warm evening sunshine. Judging by how well the girls took to cricket we could soon have our own Girlguiding Cymru cricket team!

The girls even managed to make a LIVE appearance on the 6pm HTV Welsh news who were keen to report on the joint event with Cricket Wales.

Well done Lydia, Taryn and Imogen for giving such excellent interviews! A special mention to Lydia who was celebrating her 8th birthday that day – what a brilliant way to spent your special day.

Girlguiding is often about giving our members an opportunity to try something new and exciting and the Cricket event was a wonderful event. It couldn’t have happened without the hard work of all involved and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them.

Firstly, to Cricket Wales and Welsh Fire for providing Sophia Gardens, and all the equipment we were able to use. A Huge thanks to Active Programmes Officer Sadie Mansfield for all of you organisation and planning and expert delivery of the event on the night. Well done and thanks to Sports Educators who came along to help and work towards achieving their qualifications and along with all the other volunteers helped to make the evening go so smoothly.

Lastly many thanks to all the Leaders who brought the girls and joined in the evening, was lovely to meet you all and see you taking part with such enthusiasm and enjoyment.

Finally don’t forget to look on the Girlguiding Cymru website to download your

There’s a wonderful badge and certificate too. I look forward to hearing all about your cricket club visits over the next few months.
