Girlguiding Cymru Give it a go cricket event @Sophia Gardens 2023

Over 350 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from across Wales took part in a cricket event at Sophia Gardens on 15 June 2023. The event was run by Girlguiding Cymru, Welsh Cricket, and Glamorgan Cricket.

The partnership between Cricket Wales and Girlguiding Cymru has been established since 2022 and grows from strength to strength every year. Girlguiding Cymru works with Sports Wales to ensure our girls access sporting opportunities within guiding.

As well as the cricket event, we have a Cricket Challenge pack and badge that members can take part in. The 2022 pack was so extremely popular so we proudly re-launched their new pack for 2023 at the event.

The event

The girls had the opportunity to learn about the basics of cricket have fun, and meet some of their favourite Welsh cricket stars. They also received a Welsh fire T shirt, goodie bag and a badge to celebrate their participation. The event was a huge success, and the girls had a great time. They learned a lot about cricket, and they made new friends.

The event was a great example of how sport can be used to empower girls and give them the opportunity to have fun and learn new skills. It was also a great opportunity for Girlguiding Cymru, Welsh Cricket, and Glamorgan Cricket to work together to promote cricket to girls in Wales.

The event was funded by the ECB. Their wish is for cricket to become a sport driven by equity, diversity and inclusion. They want girls to say "Cricket is a game for me!"

The evening was covered by Sky Sports News and ITV Wales.

To look out onto the oval at Sophia gardens and see Rainbows to Rangers enjoying cricket was incredible. What a way to launch our new cricket pack to our members. To have some of the players who are featured in the packs was an added bonus to the evening. The girls are excited to get their challenge packs completed. Thank you to Welsh Fire for making it all happen.
We are always looking for opportunities where girls can true new sports or activities in a girls only space. We are looking forward to many more girls visiting local cricket clubs in their areas and achieving their new cricket badge.”

The event was a success, it was great to see so many girls out on the pitch at Sophia gardens in the sunshine engaging with all the activities run by our coaches, so many of them having fun, developing their cricket skills and playing cricket games. I was great to have our Welsh Fire role models joining in with the activities with the girls and helping them grow in confidence.

The success of the event is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved. It is also a sign of the growing popularity of cricket among girls in Wales.”
