The Queen's Baton Relay arrived in Wales to tour the nation before the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The baton spent five days in Wales, celebrating community heroes.

Almost 400 baton carriers took the baton across Wales stopping at 22 locations on the way. The Baton travelled nearly 500 miles in Wales.

The baton will then tour England before arriving for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on 28 July. Members of the public are encouraged to get involved with the celebrations and embrace the arrival of the Baton at numerous locations, taking the opportunity to experience the excitement of the Commonwealth Games build up in their community.

Emma from 1st Margam (St David’s) Guides shared her experience of carrying the baton.

I really really enjoyed carrying the Commonwealth Relay Baton. It was heavier than I expected but fun to carry. My station was right next to the Mayor of Neath and Port Talbot and a baton holder from 1958 called Geraint Morgan. Which was really cool. There were lots of cameras there and a few people from the newspapers. I had loads and loads of photos taken and I was featured in the newspaper.

It was so unbelievable to hold it, I couldn’t believe it. I loved every second of it!

The Commonwealth Baton relay began on the 7th October 2021 and has visited all 72 nations and territories in the Commonwealth.

I was incredibly proud that my daughter was selected to be part of the relay as it passed through our home town of Port Talbot. The only problem was that Emma was in PGL in Brecon with 1st Margam Guides that weekend !

With the support of Emmas’s Guider Hayleigh we managed to get Emma to Margam Park for the relay and then straight back to camp.

In a single day Emma carried the Commonwealth baton and took part in rock climbing and trapeze! What a day! We are so very proud Emma not only representing her school but also Girlguiding Cymru.
