The Royal Welsh Show is organised by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, which was formed in 1904. It takes place in July of each year, at Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells, in Powys, Mid Wales. The show lasts for four days, 2022 marked the first show since the COVID-19 Pandemic. The first show was held in Aberystwyth in 1904, and its success led to the development of the permanent showground at Llanelwedd, first used in 1963.
Our involvement
Girlguiding Cymru has been involved in the Royal Welsh Show for many years and this year was a chance to return to the show following the pandemic. Girlguiding Clwyd were the show’s featured county. It was wonderful to see a large group from Girlguiding Clwyd providing their support. They were joined by Girlguiding members from the length and breadth of Wales.
The Royal Welsh Show 2022 took place from Monday 18th July to Thursday 21st July at the RWAS Builth Wells Show ground.
The Girlguiding Cymru Royal Welsh Show team for 2022 consisted of 60 Girlguiding volunteers, Guides, Rangers, Young Leaders, and Leaders. We stood out with our bright pink t-shirts and neckerchiefs.
Many of the volunteers were working towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Queens Guide Award.
The team stayed at Broneirion for the week, and were supported by a team of volunteers.
The girls were kept busy on all four days running the shopping bag crèche, the buggy crèche, running messages for the judges in the show rings and carrying the breed boards during livestock competitions. The girls took on responsibilities such as working as part of a wider team, communicating, and assisting the public.
The first day of the show was not without its challenges, as it was the hottest day on record in Wales. The team from Girlguiding Cymru managed to keep as hydrated and cool as they could despite the heat.
On Monday the girls on the buggy creche were honoured to meet the Lady Ambassador of Clwyd, Lowri Lloyd Williams.
A small group of our Rangers were interviewed on BBC Radio Cymru, and presenter Wynne Evans visited the rest of the team. We discovered that he has a close connection with Girlguiding as his partner is a leader!
The site was visited by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal on Tuesday the 19th of July. The Princess Royal was previously a Brownie and Guide herself.
On Wednesday and Thursday, our team could be seen on Y Sioe - S4C
The girls were carrying the breed boards during the ram and ewe competitions.
Diolch to all the members who made this fantastic week happen.
“What a fantastic week it was! I am so proud of the Girlguiding Cymru team.
Many were working towards various awards such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award and Queens Guide award which is the highest award in guiding. It is always amazing to see the opportunities Girlguiding can give our members.
The Royal Welsh Show is an event we always look forward to being a part of. This week was so special, and the memories made, and skills gained will remain with those involved for such a long time.
I would like to thank everyone involved, from the pre-event planning to the organisation and co-ordination each day, especially when it was so hot! Diolch! ”
