Girlguiding Cymru: Guiding in your area photography competition

What does guiding look like in your community? We want you to show us!

Girlguiding Cymru is launching an exciting new photography competition to celebrate our members and the places that make your community unique. We’re looking for inspiring photos of 2–4 Girlguiding members pictured in front of recognisable local landmarks or well-known spots in your town or village. These images will help us create resources to showcase and grow Guiding locally across Wales.

Make sure everyone featured has the right photo permissions in place, then get creative and start snapping!

✨ A prize will be awarded for each section across Wales.
✨ The competition is open to all sections including leaders and YL’s.
✨ The photo should be of one section only, volunteers can be pictured with girls if you wish.
✨ The competition closes 15 November 2025.

So grab your camera, celebrate your community, and show the world what guiding looks like where you live!

10 top tips for amazing portrait photos with your phone or camera

  1. Keep it natural – The best photos capture girls having fun, laughing, and enjoying themselves. Candid moments often look more genuine than posed ones.

  2. Use Portrait mode (if you have it) – On an iPhone or similar, switch to Portrait Mode to create a soft background blur that makes your subjects stand out beautifully.

  3. Find good light – Natural daylight is your best friend. Try facing your subjects towards the light (like a window or the sun behind you) for brighter, clearer shots.

  4. Add extra light indoors – If it’s a bit dark, use a small white light (like a desk lamp or ring light) to brighten faces without harsh shadows.

  5. Check your background – Choose simple, uncluttered backgrounds without other people, or use recognisable local landmarks to tell the story of your community.

  6. Get down to their level – Hold your phone at eye level with the girls to capture more engaging and natural portraits. Don’t take photos from above.

  7. Avoid zooming in – Instead of pinching to zoom, move closer to your subject. This keeps the photo sharp and avoids grainy images.

  8. Steady your phone – Hold your phone with two hands or rest it on a stable surface to avoid blurry shots.

  9. Encourage interaction – Ask the girls to chat, play, or share a joke. This helps capture genuine smiles and natural expressions.

  10. Take lots of shots – Don’t stop at one photo! Snap a few from slightly different angles and moments, then choose the best later.
