Rainbows, Brownies and Guides Take to the Ice in Spectacular Girlguiding Cymru Extravaganza!

On Saturday, 20th January, The Vindico Arena in Cardiff was transformed into a winter wonderland as hundreds of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from Girlguiding Cymru came together for an unforgettable ice extravaganza. The event, held in partnership with Sports Wales saw girls of all ages take to the ice for a day of fun, friendship, and new skills.

From wobbly first steps to graceful glides, the girls embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. With the Cardiff Comets on hand, they quickly gained confidence, The atmosphere was electric, filled with excited squeals, encouraging cheers, and the occasional tumble (met with peals of laughter, of course!).

The fun of the day didn’t stop there! The girls and volunteers got ready to cheer on the Cardiff Devils. The atmosphere crackled with excitement as the players took to the ice for the 7 pm face-off against the Dundee Stars. Chants of "Let's go Devils!" and enthusiastic drumming filled the arena, with the Girlguiding Cymru members leading the charge.

Throughout the match, the girls were glued to the action, cheering every goal, save, and check. The Devils didn't disappoint, delivering a thrilling performance that culminated in a nail-biting 7-4 victory.
Cardiff Devils beat Dundee Stars to earn their first home Elite League win of 2024.

Sarah-Jane’s report of the day

What an atmosphere! We had 588 of our members taking to the ice at our Ice Extravaganza event. The Cardiff Comets Ladies ice hockey team joined us on the ice during the skating session. It was fantastic to see confidence grow throughout the afternoon with some of our members who had never skated.

I think we can safely say the girls enjoyed themselves and many have now decided they are lifelong Cardiff Comets and Cardiff Devils fans! Thank you to Katrina and the amazing staff at Vindico Arena who always make us feel so welcome.

The evening saw all the girls and volunteers settle down for a match between Cardiff Devils and Dundee Stars.

The girls were also lucky to meet the Cardiff Devils after the match, they said they were thrilled to hear the cheers of the girls cheering them on during their win!

We would also like to thank the team of Girlguiding Cymru volunteers for their hard work and support during this event. I was also proud to present Sheila Mott of Girlguiding Cardiff and East Glamorgan with a thanks award.

I look forward to meeting more Girlguiding Cymru members later this year as we have a second event planned for the units that were unable to come to this one. It will be amazing to know that over 1000 members will attended our Ice Extravaganza events.
